New Parliament House, Fiji, 20 Dollars

Parliament

A short pleasant ride from the city centre to Nasese takes you to the rather impressive new Parliament buildings that opened in 1992. The buildings were designed in the style of a traditional Fijian bure, with plenty of magimagi and tapa, painted orange and landscaped. Visitors are free to visit the complex and can arrange to sit in on cession by calling 305811.

Government House

Adjacent to Thurston gardens is the official residence of Fiji's president. This grand whitewashed colonial building with majestic gardens is guarded round the clock by sulu clad soldiers. Every hour the soldiers perform a changing of the guard ceremony at the gates for anyone to photograph. The building can be seen from the road but is not open to the public. The Fiji flag in front of the mansion, when flying, signifies the presence of the President.

Thurston Gardens

These cool tropical gardens are well landscaped and never crowded. Open all year round, with labelled fauna from Fiji and the South Pacific, the gardens are a lovely place to wander. Children will even enjoy the park with its colourfully painted sugar train, a relic from the times when sugar was harvested and crushed in Suva.

Mohammed Ali mosque, Egypt, 10 Piastres

Though certainly not one of the most ancient mosques in Cairo, nor even one of the most historic, because of its grandeur and its location in the Citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali is the most popular Islamic mosque among tourists.

This mosque is also sometimes referred to as the Alabaster Mosque due to its extensive use of that stone on some of the exterior walls and other surfaces. Sometimes it is popularly known as al-qal'a, meaning citadel, and thus confused with the fortress in which it is located.

Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia, 100 Rubles

The Bolshoi Theatre (Russian: Большой театр, Bol'shoy Teatr, Large Theater) is a theatre and opera company in Moscow, Russia, which gives performances of ballet and opera.

The current building was built on Teatralnaya Square in 1825 to replace the Petrovka Theatre, which had been destroyed by fire in 1805. It was designed by architect Osip (Joseph) Bove, who had built the nearby Maly Theatre in 1824. At that time, all the Russian theatres were imperial property.

In Moscow and St Petersburg, there were two theatres only, one of them intended for opera and ballet and another one for tragedies and comedies. As opera and ballet were considered nobler than drama, the opera house was named the "Grand Theatre" ("Bolshoi" being the Russian for "large" or "grand") and the drama theatre - "Smaller Theatre" ("Maly" being the Russian for "little").
